MUSIC: Wax Dey ft. Yemi Alade – Saka Makossa @WaxDey

Queen of African pop, Yemi Alade, has joined forces with Cameroonian singer and reality TV star, Wax Dey to collaborate on a new hit song called ‘Saka Makossa’, directly translated as Dance Makossa.
Makossa a popular dance of the Douala people of Cameroon and the song is meant to highlight the influence of the genre in today’s international pop music. Just like Michael Jackson, Rihanna and P-Square have done before; it has been adapted from Cameroonian jazz maestro, Manu Dibango’s 1972 Billbooard hit, Soul Makossa.
In the song Wax Dey can be heard vainly and humorously recounting his good life that attracts women – he references the fact that he has own reality TV show, ‘Number One Girl’ and states that ‘Ban Kim Moon di snap with me’ (Even Ban Kim Moon poses for photos with me). Yemi hits back that she can match him pound for pound (If you spray I go spray). In the end, all they want is for each other to drop the talk and dance to the beautiful sound of Makossa, just like Samuel Eto’o and Cameroonian President Paul Biya.
Wax Dey had nothing but praise for Yemi Alade. ‘Working with Yemi Alade on this song was incredible. Her passion, humility and talent are incomparable, and I instantly saw that this one artist we’ll still be dancing to in 30 years time. She is truly the Miriam Makeba of our generation – so having her join me to pay homage to Makossa is indeed an honour not just for me, but for Cameroon and Cameroonian music as a whole.
