NOTE: In this interview shorthand writing "ACTIVATED", so don't LOL
Afrik: After a couple of times we tried to have this interview, it was difficult cos my oga here is so busy. Thank God we finally caught him the right time. Kindly introduce yourself to the audience sir
Ronkay: Name is Kolade Ajayi aka Ronkay, founder and CEO Culbeed Music and Culbeed Media
Afrik: Ok sir, let's start with bizz. Could you tell us more about Culbeed Music and Culbeed Media
Ronkay: Culbeed Music is a record label started in 2005 with acts like Orezi and Ogyny signed to d inprint presently.
Culbeed Media is a Media production/event agency with state of d art audio studio, photography studio and Visual studio.
Afrik: Hmm, let's concentrate on the music aspect for now. How did you discover your artist, both Orezi and Ogyny
Ronkay:Ogyny is like my brother while I have known Orezi since 2005 but then couldn't sign him cos I was busy wit another act then and didn't want to be distracted that time.
But after d initial acts's contract expired, we got talking and here we are
Afrik: Ok. We notice your artist are involved in lots of features in their upcoming albums, for example Orezi n DJ Jam Jam, Orezi n Terry G. What's the whole idea all about.
Are we expecting more of features than more of the artist alone
Ronkay: For every song that we produced, we always try to think of what is d best idea for d song. For The song don't compare me, we were trying to look for d act that has wat it takes to deliver d song. Although most people thought Terry G is all about the ginjah? I remembered that on his first album that most people neva get to listen to, he had meaningful and thought inspiring songs. So we believed that he is the one to be on the song. Jamjams feature is a concept. A good thinking that is bringing out the desired result. Orezi's album has other collaborations. We r still planning some but I can assure u, there won't be many collaborations. Maybe 30% of the whole songs might be collaborations.
Afrik: As a CEO to a respected organization, what are the challenges you face in the entertainment industry and how do you plan to reflect positively in the industry
Ronkay: Our challenges are the same in Nigeria as a label, piracy, no proper distribution network to effectively market and distribute records, lack of knowledge of what copyright is and how to administer copyrights etc these challenges are many and diverse and not one that an individual can solve. It needs a collective body of concerned stakeholders to be schooled and from there form a solution peculiar to the Nigerian environment.
Afrik: The Association of Performing Musicians (PMAN), personally do you think they are functioning when it comes to the issues relating to piracy
Ronkay:I don't wanna talk about PMAN.
Afrik: Ok, so let talk about Ogyny, what should expect from his end
Ronkay: Ogyny is presently in the studios cooking up d hits.
Afrik: Great, let's hit your private life as we always do. Who is the woman behind those smiles of yours
Ronkay: (smile) I prefer to make this private :D. No vex
Afrik: Yes boss, Yes boss. A little advice to the upcoming artist please
Ronkay: Keep singing. Keep writing and keep recording. Nobody knows which song go blow. Be hardworking and prayerful
Afrik: Thanks a lot sir for sharing your time with us, and wish your outfit a successful 2011
Ronkay: Thank you so much!!!
